You will find your weak links(trans and rear end) soon enough. If you are going to drop money on an engine, that is useless with out a way to get the power to the ground. I'm sure anyone with tools and a place could do the same. I blueprinted the assembly to the best of my abilities. Make sure either was assembled with clearances correct for high performance use. I would put in larger boost valve(s) in either trans to increase pressure. I used a 700r4 filter and stock pan over filled by a quart. This avoids starving the trans of fluid and smoking some clutches or band. The inspected stock hard parts are working good for me into the 12s in a 3600# car.Īs dwwl sez, the 2004r needs a bottom feed filter and an over filled pan, or better yet a deep pan and "bottom feeder" setup from one of the 2004r venders. Once you get to 500hp I would definitely go with a billet shaft forward drum to avoid the park and six neutrals. Id like to ask what is your opinion on which "hard parts" you think the 2004r needs to handle more than 300hp. I hope someone with the 700 will jump in so you got another opinion. I did a lot of other little things to mine because I enjoyed the challenge. I know I got carried away with my builds, but I only wanted to do it once. If you are serious about it, then you need to upgrade the forward drum also to five. But you need to upgrade some of the hard parts, and upgrade the tranny from the stock form to live. Now if you pull it down and redo the pump with 10 vanes, hardened rings and ect., and add the better clutches and upgrade the clutch count in the direct drum to eight, you stand a chance. So with bigger valves and a little more pressure, you could handle maybe up to 250-300 hp. The stock ss montes only could handle about 200 + hp. If it a good one, then you have a problem in stock form even with the shift kit with the bigger boost valves. That is if it really has the ss valve body. If you have a 200-4r from a monte ss, you have one of the better 200 trannys. I like the 200-4r, never had a 700 apart to see what they are really like. ![]()
